Eunice Kathleen Waymon was born in 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, USA. Her musical talent emerged early and by the age of 10 she had already begun performing in public. In 1950 she began her studies at Juilliard School of Music in New York and began playing shows in 1954, having adopted the stage name Nina Simone. In 1959 the single ‘I Loves You Porgy’ from her debut album sold over a million copies. It was the beginning of a career which brought her international stardom as an artist who combined jazz, classical, folk, gospel, blues, pop and soul in her music. Her commitment to the civil rights movement saw her record many protest songs and she became a key activist figure, her outspoken fight for equality as much a part of her legacy as her unique sound. Nina Simone died in 2003.
